1. If you are planning on visiting observation centers, DO NOT wear a flowy dress. I repeat DO NOT in fact only wear a dress if it's maxi length. If not you will have a Marilyn Monroe moment and it won't be as glamorous instead it will be embarrassing.
2. New York is the Fashion capital of the world so try to look presentable rather than like a typical Hawaiian shirt, cargo shorts and fanny pack tourist. Suggested swaps
-Cargo shorts with anything but cargo shorts, maybe just regular shorts.
-Hawaiian shirt: nice Cotton top since you will walk and it is a breathable material.
-Fanny Pack: a purse with a zipper, and for men USE you pockets that's what they are there for! And if you really can't go without your fanny pack then may I suggest the more modern fashion forward option : THE belt bag!
3. Last but not least I know I've stressed the importance of fashion during your trip but don't go over board and wear the highest shoes you own, when it comes to footwear comfort is priority. I would suggest sneakers {you will be doing a lot of walking}. As for fitting in with the locals not to worry its Manhattan's best kept secret: the shoe swap - everyone commutes in sneakers ad changes to gorgeous shoes in the office.
Au revoir and bon voyage!
